Arisaemas for 2005
|
When I imported the Amorphophallus paeoniifolius, bulbifer and nepalensis from India this year,
I decided to give their selection of Arisaemas a try, too. The reaction at the CT Cactus &
Succulent Society's Show & Sale in early April was extremely positive, so I'm hoping that
my web-based customers will like them, too.
I brought in seven species, some of which nearly sold out at the show. The tubers are a mature
size for each species. I would expect each of them to bloom this season.
I list the hardiness zone (U.S.) for each species. The information was taken from a page at
aroid.org. I'm growing these species for the first time this year, too, so I can't give you any
first hand hints. However, regardless of the hardiness zone listed for each species, they will
all require dry conditions to survive the Winter months.
If you put them in the ground and want to leave them there for the Winter, I suggest very
well drained soil. A raised bed wouldn't be bad, something along the lines that you'd make
for hardy cacti. Once you have them in a well drained location, cover the area they're in
to protect it from the cold water from rain and snow.
I plan to grow mine in pots and bring them in for the Winter. Many people keep them in peat moss
in the refrigerator during Winter, but I don't have room for that so I'm going to try them in the
basement. I may put them in the garage, which rarely drops below freezing.
